Whales in Tenerife: A Guide to the Cetaceans of the Canary Islands

Few places in Europe offer the opportunity to encounter whales and dolphins in their natural environment quite like Tenerife. The deep Atlantic waters surrounding the Canary Islands are home to an extraordinary variety of marine life. Up to 28 species of cetaceans have been documented in Canary waters, including whales, dolphins, and beaked whales. For visitors to Tenerife, this makes a day at sea much more than just a boat trip. Every journey offers the possibility of experiencing these remarkable animals in the wild.

Why Are There So Many Whales and Dolphins Around Tenerife?

The secret lies beneath the surface. The Canary Islands have very little shallow continental shelf, meaning the ocean becomes extremely deep relatively close to the coastline. Combined with favorable ocean temperatures and currents, these conditions create an exceptional habitat for marine mammals. The waters between Tenerife and La Gomera are particularly important. Here, some cetacean populations are resident throughout the year, while other species pass through Canary waters seasonally during feeding or migration.

The Short-Finned Pilot Whale

The short-finned pilot whale is one of Tenerife's most characteristic marine residents. Despite its name, the pilot whale actually belongs to the dolphin family. These highly social animals live in close family groups and are particularly well adapted to the deep waters found off Tenerife's coast. Resident communities can be found in the waters around the southwest of Tenerife throughout the year. For many of our guests aboard Papillon, seeing a pilot whale quietly surfacing beside the catamaran becomes one of the most memorable moments of their holiday.

Bottlenose Dolphin

Tursiops truncatus

Another year-round resident is the bottlenose dolphin. Powerful, intelligent, and highly social, bottlenose dolphins are among the most recognizable cetaceans in the world. They can sometimes be seen traveling together, surfacing alongside one another, or moving through the wake of passing boats. Together with the short-finned pilot whale, the bottlenose dolphin is one of the species most closely associated with Tenerife's whale-watching waters.

Atlantic Spotted Dolphin

Stenella frontalis

Atlantic spotted dolphins are energetic and exceptionally graceful swimmers. Adults develop the distinctive spotted markings that give the species its name. They can appear in groups and are known for their active behavior, sometimes approaching vessels or swimming through their bow waves. Sightings around Tenerife are possible, although unlike the resident pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins, their presence can be more seasonal.

Common Dolphin

Delphinus delphis

The common dolphin is another species that can occasionally be encountered in Canary waters. Recognizable by the striking color pattern along its sides, it is a fast and highly active swimmer that often travels in social groups. An encounter with a group of common dolphins can transform an already beautiful day at sea into something extraordinary.

Rough-Toothed Dolphin

Steno bredanensis

The rough-toothed dolphin is less familiar to many visitors but is another species recorded around the Canary Islands. It has a distinctive elongated head and a more streamlined appearance than the bottlenose dolphin. Sightings are less predictable, which makes encountering one particularly special.

Striped Dolphin

Stenella coeruleoalba

Fast, elegant, and beautifully marked, striped dolphins inhabit warm and temperate oceans around the world. They are named after the dark stripe running along the side of their body. They can also be encountered in Canary waters, although they are not among the species we expect to see on every excursion.

Bryde's Whale

Balaenoptera edeni

The Bryde's whale is one of the larger whale species that may pass through the waters around Tenerife. Unlike the resident pilot whales, these animals are encountered more seasonally. Seeing a large whale surface in the open Atlantic is a very different experience from encountering dolphins or pilot whales — and one that can never be predicted in advance.

Fin Whale

The fin whale is one of the largest animals on Earth. These impressive whales migrate across enormous distances and have been recorded in Canary waters. They are not resident around Tenerife, so sightings are considerably less common than those of pilot whales or bottlenose dolphins. For those fortunate enough to encounter one, however, the sheer scale of the animal is unforgettable.

Sperm Whale

Physeter macrocephalus

The sperm whale is one of the great deep-diving specialists of the ocean. Its ability to descend to extraordinary depths makes the deep Atlantic waters surrounding the Canary Islands a suitable environment for the species. Sperm whales have been recorded around the archipelago, although sightings during normal whale-watching excursions are relatively uncommon.

Beaked Whales

The Canary Islands are also important habitat for several species of beaked whale. Among those recorded around Tenerife are Cuvier's beaked whale and Blainville's beaked whale. These mysterious animals spend considerable periods underwater and are capable of extremely deep dives, making them much harder to observe than dolphins or pilot whales.

Can You See Whales in Tenerife All Year?

Yes — and this is one of the things that makes Tenerife exceptional. The resident populations of short-finned pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins mean that cetaceans can be encountered throughout the year. However, the ocean is not a zoo. The animals are completely wild and move freely through their natural environment. No responsible operator can guarantee which species will appear on a particular day, or exactly where they will be. That unpredictability is part of what makes every encounter genuine.
